EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
